I upgraded my project from AR 20.1.2 to AR 20.2.1. The Report Designer throws an error when I try to open the report in Visual Studios 2026. The project compiles without any error. I have attached a picture of the call stack.Call stack.zip

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Mescius Support.

This issue sometimes occurs when the installed version of ActiveReports on the machine doesn’t match the version added to the project.

Please install version 20.2 again using the following installer and see if it resolves your issue:

    https://cdn.grapecity.com/ActiveReports/ar20/ActiveReports-v20.2.1.790.exe

If you still face the issue, please share the following details so that we can assist you further:

    1. Your report file.
    2. OS and VS version.

    Regards,

    Prabhat Sharma.

    Hello Tracy,

We have installed the same version of ActiveReports at our end and your shared reports are opening fine at our end. We have attached screenshots showing the same. For your reference, we have also attached a stripped-down sample that we are using at our end.

In case you still face the issue opening the report designer with the attached sample, please let us know.

Also, when uninstalling ActiveReports, please make sure that it uninstalls the VS extensions related to AR on your end. If it does not, then please remove it manually and then try installing AR again.

    Regards,

    Prabhat Sharma.

    Hi Prabhat,

I received any error trying to open the reports in the sample you provided. I do know what the problem is. I attached the call stack. I even uninstalled Visual Studios and ActiveRerports and the reinstalled them and still got an error. Worse, I tried it on another machine I have and was able to open the reports in the sample.Call stack.zip

    Hi Prabhat,

One other question, How do you uninstall the AR extension manually?

  • Posted 21 October 2026, 7:21 am EST

    Hi Prabhat,

The computer the designer worked on is still using AR version 20.1.2.583 not the new version 20.2.1.790

  • Posted 22 October 2026, 8:03 am EST

    Hello Tracy,

    Apologies for the inconvenience caused.

It is quite strange, as the reports work fine on our end with the same version. It could be a machine-specific problem that is causing this issue. You can check out the following link to see how to uninstall the extension manually and uninstall the “ActiveReports 20 VS2022 - VS2026” extension from the list:

    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/22444799/how-to-uninstall-vsix-visual-studio-extensions

After this update, update your VS and install the AR with the given installer again. If you still have the issue on your end, please let us know.

You can also check by updating the AR version on your other machine.

    Regards,

    Prabhat Sharma.

    Hi Prabhat,

I uninstalled AR version 20.1.2.583 from my other machine. The AR extension was uninstalled by the uninstaller. I then installed AR version 20.2.1.790. I used the AR upgrade tool to upgrade the project. I got the same errors I already reported when i tried to open the report.

I uninstalled AR version 20.2.1.790. I made sure the AR extension was uninstalled by the uninstaller. I then used NuGet to update the project. I received an error indicating an error that the DS.Documents.Imaging.dll version 9.1.4 could not be found. I rolled the DS.* files back to this version as indicated by the image I have attached. I think there are two issues. One with the DS files and one with the AR extension. NuGet.zip

    Hi Tracy,

Looks like you may be having a different version of DS.Documents.Imaging referenced in your project, or a binding redirect, may be referencing a different version of the package.

Could you please try manually installing version 9.1.4 of DS.Documents.Imaging.dll? If the issue persists, please make sure that there is no bindingRedirect specified for the package.

However, if the issue persists please try sharing a minimal runnable version of your project so we can reproduce the issue on our end and further investigate the issue.

    Thanks,

    Anand

    Hi Tracy,

Apologies for the inconvenience. We completely understand your frustration, especially after the extensive troubleshooting you have already performed.

While reviewing recently reported issues, we found a known problem in ActiveReports v20.2.1 where the Visual Studio extension may fail to install correctly on ARM-based Windows machines (Internal reference for this issue is AR-38041)

Could you please confirm whether the affected machine is an Intel-based (x64/x86) Windows machine or an ARM-based (ARM64) Windows machine?

    • If it is an Intel-based (x64/x86) machine: Please clean the solution, remove the bin, obj, and packages folders, rebuild the project, and then try opening the report designer again. If the issue persists, please share the latest call stack ZIP so we can investigate further.
    • If it is an ARM-based (ARM64) machine: This matches the known issue mentioned above. It is already being addressed and is planned to be fixed in v20.2.2. In the meantime, we recommend staying on v20.1.4.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

    Regards,

    Anand
