From Email-Driven Spreadsheets to Automated Browser-Based Planning at MSAntunes
Case Study | April 21, 2026 | MSAntunes Informática
Industry Context
MSAntunes Informática is a Brazil-based consulting firm with nearly 40 years of experience developing software solutions. For more than two decades, the company has focused on financial and economic planning systems for real estate developers through its flagship platform, GPS.
In the real estate development industry, financial planning is both critical and complex. Organizations must manage multiple ventures, produce feasibility studies, and generate consolidated financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow projections. These processes require high levels of accuracy, auditability, and traceability, often across many stakeholders.
Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) spreadsheets remain deeply embedded in this industry. Finance professionals rely heavily on Excel for modeling, analysis, and reporting—it’s not just a tool, but a core part of how they think and work. However, as data volumes grow and collaboration expands across teams and data sources, traditional spreadsheet-based workflows begin to break down, creating inefficiencies, risks, and scalability challenges.
To better understand the transformation, we spoke with Luís Kalil Bonturim Antunes, Systems Analyst and Marketing Lead at MSAntunes. Luís brought a unique perspective that combines deep technical expertise with a strong understanding of customer needs and their product strategy.

The Challenge
Before implementing their current solution, MSAntunes’ clients relied heavily on manual, spreadsheet-driven workflows. Data collection and consolidation were handled through email and or network directories for shared team use. Making them rely on internal communication apps or additional emails to signal work progress.
“Two people spent up to ten days sending approximately 300 spreadsheets to various departments, then consolidating all the results.”
This approach created several critical challenges:
- Operational Inefficiencies: The process was time-consuming, repetitive, and heavily dependent on manual coordination.
- Version Control Issues: Spreadsheets shared via email or network drives made it difficult to ensure teams were working on the correct version.
- Limited Scalability: As the number of projects, stakeholders, and data inputs grew, workflows became increasingly difficult to manage.
- Performance Constraints: Many users worked with extremely large Excel files that could take minutes to load, or in some cases even crash their machines.
- Audit & Compliance Risks: Tracking changes, ensuring data integrity, and maintaining a reliable audit trail were ongoing concerns.
At the same time, replacing spreadsheets entirely was not an option. Their users are primarily finance professionals and are deeply familiar with Excel functionality, including its formulas, shortcuts, and workflows.
“For our users, Excel compatibility is extremely important because people that are within this part of business, controllers, they're working with numbers. I've seen these people working within Excel, they know all the shortcuts! It's really important for them to feel free with this environment because that's where they live. It's how their minds operate. It's like their bread and butter. It's an everyday thing.”
MSAntunes needed a way to modernize these workflows without disrupting how their users already worked.
The Solution
MSAntunes selected SpreadJS, the industry leading JavaScript spreadsheet component, to transform their clients spreadsheet-based workflows into a fully web-based, centralized system without sacrificing the familiarity their users required.
“We started looking for a way to show the spreadsheets within our solution, and SpreadJS was the best one!”
Instead of distributing .xlsx files manually, the team converted existing Excel files into reusable templates. These templates are generated dynamically by the system and delivered directly in the browser, allowing users to input data and work within their application interface.
“The spreadsheet was no longer used as an information repository, but rather as a user-friendly data collection interface.”

This shift redefined the role of spreadsheets, from static files into dynamic, structured interfaces connected to a centralized database. By leveraging their clients existing spreadsheet layouts, MSAntunes was able to significantly accelerate development while ensuring a seamless user experience.
“Because we used the original files as templates to be populated by our system, the adoption curve was minimal for the dozens of people involved in the process.”
The browser-based approach also improved performance and usability. Instead of working with large, resource-intensive files locally, users now interact with only the data relevant to their role, while processing is handled on the server.

Additionally, the solution provides flexibility for different user preferences. Some users work entirely within the browser, while others can import and export Excel files for more complex or offline tasks—ensuring the system adapts to a variety of client workflows.
Results & Business Impact
By embedding SpreadJS into its platform, MSAntunes significantly improved efficiency, scalability, and user experience across its clients’ financial workflows.
- Reduced Processing Time from DAYS to HOURS: What previously required two employees working up to 10 days each month can now be completed by a single person in just a few hours.
- Automated & Centralized Data Collection: Spreadsheet distribution and consolidation are now fully automated, with all data flowing directly into a centralized corporate database.
- Accelerated Development by 50%: Reusing existing Excel files as templates reduced development time by an estimated 50% compared to building custom interfaces from scratch.
- Seamless User Adoption: Familiar spreadsheet interfaces enabled immediate adoption with minimal training across dozens of users.
- Improved Performance & Scalability: Users no longer rely on large, unstable Excel files, data is processed server-side and delivered efficiently.
- Enhanced Governance & Trust: Centralized control over data and formulas ensures accuracy, consistency, and auditability.
