Accessibility

Wijmo OLAP controls provide accessibility support for PivotPanel, PivotGrid, PivotChart, and Slicer.

Each control has its own keyboard workflow and accessible information. The available behavior can depend on the control configuration, current layout, and displayed data.

PivotPanel

PivotPanel exposes the available fields and report areas as accessible field lists.

The following commands apply when the corresponding field list, report area, or command has focus.

Key

Action

Condition

Tab / Shift+Tab

Move between field lists, report areas, and commands.

The target is included in the Tab sequence.

Arrow keys

Move within a field list or report area.

The field list or report area has focus.

Space

Choose or clear an available field.

An available field has focus.

Enter

Open the field context menu.

A field has focus.

Shift+F10

Open the field context menu.

A field has focus.

Context Menu key

Open the field context menu.

A field has focus.

Delete / Backspace

Remove the focused field.

The field is in a report area.

Escape

Close the field menu and return focus.

A field menu is open.

Users can access the Filters, Columns, Rows, and Values areas when the PivotPanel is enabled and the corresponding area contains at least one visible field. Empty and disabled report areas are excluded from the Tab sequence. Empty areas remain available as drop targets for pointer-based field operations.

When the PivotPanel is disabled, its field lists and report areas are also disabled and cannot receive keyboard focus.

Dragging fields between report areas remains available for pointer users. The field context menu provides keyboard commands for supported field operations.

PivotPanel can announce field actions and the invocation of the Update command to screen readers. An Update announcement confirms that the command was invoked; it does not indicate that an asynchronous data refresh has completed.

PivotGrid

PivotGrid provides grid semantics and keyboard navigation for data cells and headers.

Row and column headers are not necessarily included in the page's keyboard sequence. To focus headers and operate grouped rows or columns from the keyboard, configure headersFocusability to include the required headers.

import * as wjGrid from '@mescius/wijmo.grid';
import * as wjOlap from '@mescius/wijmo.olap';

const pivotGrid = new wjOlap.PivotGrid('#pivotGrid', {
    itemsSource: pivotEngine,
    headersFocusability: wjGrid.HeadersFocusability.All
});

HeadersFocusability value

Focusable headers

None

No row or column headers.

Column

Column headers only.

Row

Row headers only.

All

Both row and column headers.

After the corresponding header can receive focus, use the following commands:

Key

Action

Condition

Arrow keys

Navigate data cells and focusable headers.

PivotGrid has focus.

Enter / Space

Expand or collapse the current group.

A sortable row-field header in the top-left panel has focus and both the grid and column allow sorting.

Alt+Left

Collapse the current group.

A collapsible group has focus.

Alt+Right

Expand the current group.

A collapsible group has focus.

The expanded or collapsed state is exposed to assistive technologies. Set collapsibleSubtotals to false when the application does not require subtotal expand and collapse controls.

The default expand and collapse target may be smaller than the WCAG 2.2 target-size recommendation. Applications with strict target-size requirements should verify the rendered target and enlarge the actual interactive element with application CSS when necessary.

Popup Focus Management

When Field Settings or Show Detail is opened from the keyboard, focus moves into the dialog.

Closing the dialog returns focus to the field or grid location that opened it. If that location is no longer available because the field was removed or the view changed, focus moves to a valid remaining field or cell.

A context menu remains open until the requested dialog is ready, preventing focus from returning to the underlying grid before it can move into the dialog.

PivotChart

PivotChart exposes an accessible chart figure and uses the accessibility behavior of its underlying chart control.

The available chart regions and keyboard operations depend on the generated chart type and content. For chart names, focus mode, keyboard navigation, tooltips, rendering engines, and chart-type limitations, see Chart Accessibility.

Slicer

Slicer exposes a named filter group and an accessible list of filter options.

Key

Action

Tab / Shift+Tab

Move between Multi-Select, Clear Filter, and the filter list.

Arrow keys

Move between filter options.

Space

Change the current filter option.

Enter / Space

Activate a focused button when supported.

The Multi-Select button exposes its pressed state to assistive technologies, allowing users to determine whether multiple selection is enabled.

Use Multi-Select when multiple values are required. Activate Clear Filter to restore the filter.

When a Slicer header is visible, it supplies the accessible name for the Slicer group and filter list. When the header is hidden, the name is derived from the Slicer or its associated field.

The Multi-Select button, Clear Filter button, and filter list follow the configured Tab order. When the Slicer is disabled, its filter list and controls are removed from keyboard navigation.

Slicer exposes its current filter, selection, and multi-selection state to assistive technologies. Activating Clear Filter produces a status announcement. Individual list refreshes are not announced separately, avoiding duplicate screen-reader output. The visual focus treatment depends on the Slicer's display mode.

Status Messages

PivotPanel and PivotGrid can provide status feedback for supported operations that change control state without moving focus.

The message describes the operation that was invoked, such as choosing or clearing a field, moving or removing a field, expanding or collapsing a group, or invoking the Update command. An Update message confirms that the command was invoked; it does not report completion of an asynchronous data refresh.

The exact screen-reader output depends on the browser, operating system, screen reader, control configuration, and application markup.

Application Responsibilities

Applications using OLAP controls should verify a logical Tab order, meaningful names, focus visibility, status feedback for application-defined asynchronous operations, contrast and target size after customization, zoom behavior, and screen-reader output in supported environments.

Wijmo OLAP controls provide support for applicable WCAG 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 Level AA requirements. This support does not guarantee that every OLAP layout or complete application satisfies every WCAG success criterion.

For the requirements, see Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. For screen-reader testing, see NVDA.
